Artistic Director for Southwest Ballet Theatre

Southwest Ballet Theatre (“SWBT”) is a nonprofit, classical ballet company located in the West Valley of Phoenix, Arizona. Since 2015, SWBT has offered a well-rounded dance education as well as performance opportunities in full-length ballets through its unique co-sponsorship agreement with Estrella Mountain Community College’s Performing Arts Center. SWBT prides itself in offering a premier venue for children to experience, actively and authentically, the world of dance. SWBT also has a strong presence in the community, providing high-quality ballet productions at a reasonable cost, plus local, specialized outreach for various community members. SWBT is seeking an Artistic Director to rebuild the program post-COVID.  The Artistic Director is responsible for the effective leadership and operations of SWBT. The Artistic Director will ensure a safe, nurturing, positive, and structured environment that promotes excellence in dance and individual fulfillment in accomplishment. The Artistic Director is supported by a strong volunteer group led by the Board of Directors.

Essential functions:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of both The School of Southwest Ballet Theatre and the performance company, ensuring a safe, efficient, and supportive education setting for staff, students, and families
  • Maintain an active teaching schedule as a participating faculty member
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate artistic personnel including performers, choreographers, teachers, and stage managers
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and curriculum to help differentiate SWBT from other studios
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop program budgets
  • Maintain the co-partnership agreement/relationship with Estrella Mountain Community College and work with the Board of Directors to maintain and develop strategic partnerships with other community-based organizations, individuals, business, and corporations
  • Create choreography for the student Showcase
  • Manage rehearsals for all productions
  • Approve production choreography, scenic and costume designs, sound, and lighting
  • Provide annual evaluations to student dancers
  • May be assigned other tasks and duties reasonably related to the above job responsibilities
  • Opportunities to dance in productions

Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • An existing, active network and strong working relationship with members of the professional dance and dance education communities is essential
  • Bachelor’s degree in dance or dance education preferred, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience
  • Experience managing and overseeing ballet productions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Job Type:

Part-time employee with annual contract

Pay:

$45-$55 per hour for teaching and rehearsals, depending on experience, plus $250-1,000 per month, depending on enrollment
